Ants can create havoc in your home and garden. Although, some ant infestations are not considered as a potential threat there are several species of ants that can cause actual structural and economical damage to your property. Other than structural damage, ants can carry viral and bacterial diseases in your homes.
Some species of ants are home dwellers, while there are also other types that prefer to live in gardens or fields. Ants are mostly attracted indoors to food sources or moist and warm places. There is a need to devise a strategy to control the potential resources that attract ant infestations. For this purpose, you should have a clear idea about the factors that attract ants to your house and garden.
What attracts ants? There are many things that can attract ants such as different environmental conditions, foods, products, certain plants, insects, electronics and more. The majority of ants are attracted to moisture and warmer locations near pipelines, electric outlets, cupboards, holes, water heaters, boilers, crevices, etc. Ants can also be found in poor sanitary conditions, for example, they are attracted to spilled sweets or food leftovers in houses or other properties. Ants are also drawn to particular plant species such as roses, clematis, penstemon or hosta plant. There are many more things that can attract ants but we are going to talk about them in more detail later in the article.
Ants can damage vegetation in your lawns, while some the ant species are helpful for soil aerating purposes, pollination or to control the populations of other pests in the garden.
There are thousands of species of ants and fortunately, not all of them cause damage in your homes and lawns. According to a survey conducted in the USA by the National Pest Management Association, the ant infestations are on the rise and most common ant types that pest control companies are dealing with are carpenter ants, odorous house ants and pavement ants.
Ants can cause damage and are not to be taken lightly, for example, carpenter ants can cause massive structural damage in your wooden ceiling, floors or cupboard in your homes or buildings. Mound ants are notorious for their capability to destroy your fields and farmlands. These ants have the potential of clearing your vegetation within the range of 40 to 50 feet. They feed and are attracted to dead matter, seeds, bugs, meat or honeydew-producing insects, etc.
Kitchen cupboards and sinks are the ideal shelters for ants, where they are mostly attracted to food leftovers, fruits, sugar supplements, and spilled juices. Therefore, try to maintain the good sanitary condition and dispose of your garbage and leftover food regularly. Keep your bathroom dry and seal all the leakage points to avoid the colonization of ants under your bathtub or near pipelines.
In the following section, we have given an in-depth and complete fact sheet for different types of ants and factors that attract them to houses, gardens and buildings. Let’s begin!
Note: If you want to know if a specific product, food, environmental condition, plant and other things attract ants, use the following table of contents.
Environmental Factors That Attract Ants
Ants are attracted to several environmental factors other than food sources. Some of them are water, heat, electric supplies or darker places, etc. Ants need moist and warm places to survive and to continue developing their colony. The behavior of ants can be different according to their type.
Most of the species search for darker places where they can find food easily. Water is the most important abiotic factor that lures ants in your homes, restaurants or buildings. If you live in a dry place where water is hard to find, the search for water can lure ants into your homes.
A larger infestation of ants can cause serious problems. The ant colonization is often more observed during spring (64%) or summer (67%) season and a handful of ants can be seen in other seasons. However, they are considered a year-round pest regardless of the favorable environmental conditions for ants.
The small colonies of ants reproduce rapidly and can increase its population within months. Therefore, if you see ants crawling in your home or garden, take strict measures to prevent their colonization before they cause any serious damage.
Ants are attracted to warmer places and surroundings so that they can nourish their colonies. In buildings and homes, ants live mostly near boilers, electric wiring or electrical supplies. They make their shelters in the holes or cracks where they can easily get all their life supplies without any hindrance. Time to time maintenance and good sanitary practice can save you from a potential ant threat in the future.
There is a long list of various other factors and environmental conditions that are favorable for ant infestations. In the following sections, you will find in-depth information about the different environmental factors and conditions that attract ants and we will give you a fact sheet about the relationship of these environmental factors with different species of ants.
Are Ants Attracted to Water?
Yes, ants are attracted to water. Moist and damp areas such as moist corners in your bathrooms, under the sink, tubs, moist basements, water heater, boiler, roof leaks, plant pots or water pipelines near leakage points particularly attract ants. During the dry season, in order to survive ants are usually attracted to water leaks or flooded places. The majority of the ant species can get most of the water supplies from their food sources (sugar ants, carpenter ants) but some of them will make their shelters near the reliable water source and when that water source runs out they will go and search for a new one. In some cases, this can be your house or a building.
The ants that need plenty of water to establish their colonies are usually termed as moisture ants (yellow ants and cornfield ants). Pharaoh ants also like to make their nests near water sources whereas carpenter ants are attracted to damp environment. Keep your toilet and kitchen clean and dry to prevent the infestation of ants in your home. Seal all the pipelines to cut off water sources that can attract ants.
Are Ants Attracted to Electricity?
Yes, ants are attracted to electricity. When electricity passes through electric wires, it emits the electromagnetic field which gives off warmth. The ants may get attracted to electronic supplies due to unhygienic conditions, warmth, food crumbs or stained electrical outlets. Larger colonies of ants in the electronic supplies are a great threat to your household or for co-workers in offices.
The most commonly known ant species that make their shelter near electronic are crazy ants (black crazy ants, raspberry crazy ants, Caribbean crazy ants), fire ants, carpenter ants, Kamikaze ants, Asian super ants, acrobat ants, tiny black ants, etc. To prevent the establishment of ant colonies in your electrical appliances, properly clean your supplies, seal the entry spaces and do not touch them with dirty hands.
Does Mold Attract Ants?
According to some reports, ants have been seen wandering near molds. Molds grow in wet places on dead organic material and they both (ants and mold) get attracted to similar environmental conditions. Mold does not attract ants in your homes. It will be more appropriate to say that there are similar environmental factors that attract ants and encourage mold growth in your house.
Keep your surroundings clean, maintain good sanitation and block all the entry points to avoid molds and ant infestation in your home. You can also use ant repellent herbs to distract ant and to create barriers around your home.

Ants are attracted to warmth and are typically seen outside during the summer season. They make shelters near electrical appliances, water boiler and water in general where the temperature is suitable for their survival. However, they cannot survive in extreme temperature conditions or during a long dry season.
Place barriers or ant repellent herbs around the boundary of your home to prevent the entry of ants during the dry season or during extreme conditions. You can also use other chemical pesticides to block the entry point of ants.
Are Ants Attracted to Light or Dark?
The majority of the ants are not affected by dark or bright surroundings, but they do prefer dark more than light. For instance, you will usually find them behind the cupboard, in cracks or holes, under sinks, tubs, near pipelines, etc. This helps them to remain undetected and they have higher chances of survival. Ants use chemical pointers and spatial memories to locate and move through the dark and confined places.
However, flying ants show positive phototaxic behavior, i.e. move towards light sources. To prevent the entry of ants in dark places, regularly call plumbers for maintenance services and get rid of all potential shelter points of ants.
What Attracts Ants in the Winter?
Ant cannot thrive during the winter or rainy season and they will die off when the weather conditions become extreme. Some of the ants move indoors and establish their colonies where the temperature is relatively higher than outside. During winter and in snowy conditions, ants establish their colonies in homes near water heaters, hot water pipes or near boilers.
As most of the ants die off in winter, the remaining ones get their food and water from indoors. You can take advance measures during winter conditions to prevent the infestation of ants in your homes or buildings.
Different Type of Ants and Things That Attract Them

Why Are Ants Attracted to Electronics?
In some cases, ants can also infest your electronic appliances or electrical wirings. If you see swarming ants coming out of your electronic appliances, outlets and wirings then this can be a very alarming situation for your household.
Ants are capable to cause massive structural or financial damage if not controlled in earlier stages of infestation as they can damage the electrical circuits or wirings in your house. In severe cases, they can also burn your house down by damaging insulation around electrical wires.
There can be multiple reasons why ants are attracted to electronics. The most common reason is the unhygienic surrounding and stained or greasy circuits or switchboards. Stained circuits can lure ants to build their shelter in the hollow areas of electrical appliances or outlets. In addition to food sources, the other factor that attracts ants towards electronics is a suitable environment or warmth near or in them.
The electrical wires generate a magnetic field when they conduct electricity. This phenomenon increases the temperature near electrical appliances in comparison to the surrounding temperature.
The magnetic field around electrical wires also helps to improve the communication between ants by increasing the intensity of the pheromones. In the following sections, we have explained why ants are attracted to your electronics, gadgets, cars and even machines. Let’s start!
Why Are Ants Attracted to My Phone?
Ants can get attracted to your phone due to sugary and sticky substances on it but nowadays phones are really slim and it is impossible for ants to enter them and cause damage. The only entry point is a 3.5 mm jack for headphones but more and more phones are being produced without it. Ants contain magnetic receptors in their antennae and can be also attracted to electrical appliances that release electromagnetic fields.

Are Ants Attracted to Electrical Outlets?
Ants can be attracted to electrical outlets and other electrical equipment due to poor hygienic conditions, strained sockets, or due to the magnetic field. They can also build their shelters in the hollow areas between plugs or sockets.
Ants can be electrocuted if they come in contact with electricity. This will cause their death. After the electric shock, they release the alarm pheromone or alert message to call the other ants for help which draws other ants to the same spot and causes their death as well. The build-up of a large number of dead ants in your electrical outlet may lead to malfunctioning or in worst cases to a fire.
How to Attract Ants Intentionally: Instructions
The most effective method to eradicate the ant infestation is to use ant baits. They are used to intentionally attract ants to consume the bait and carry it back to their nest. The consumption of the ant baits by the ant queen or other ants results in their death. Ant baits can also be used to draw out ants from places like laptops or electrical outlets.
There are different types of ant baits available commercially that can be extremely beneficial to get rid of ants. Ant baits are attractive food products for ants (+ insecticide) that can draw ants out of their shelter.
It is necessary to understand the nature and behavior of ants towards certain food sources in order to be able to select the perfect bait to eliminate the infestation of the targeted ant species. Here is the step by step guide on how to attract ants intentionally.
Step 1: Identify the Infested Area or Entry Points
If you are planning to eradicate the ant infestation in your house or in the fields, then the first step is the identification of the infested area or entry point of ants in your house or farmland.
Ants mostly follow a distinct pattern or trail which will help you to identify their shelters or entry points. Their selection of food and behavior will help you to identify their nature.
Step 2: Identification of Ants
The second step to eradicate the ant infestation is the correct identification of the ant type. Different species of ants show different behavior and orientations. Moreover, ant baits or insecticides that work for one species may not work for another species. Therefore, correct identification of ants helps to determine the perfect strategy to get rid of a particular variety of the pest.
Step 3: Selection of the Perfect Bait
After identification of ant species, you can place the perfect ant baits at the entry points or near ant nests according to the company product guidelines. There are different types of ant baits available commercially such as sugar-based ant baits, greasy or fat-based ant baits or protein-based baits. You could initially test a bait if it works or just read on the package for what types of ants that bait is intended for.
You can also prepare homemade natural baits such as honey bait, sugar bait, peanut butter bait or other fat or protein-based baits to lure ants out of their shelters. Add borax or any other insecticide in the home-based ant bait or treat ants with insecticide spray after luring them out of their shelters.
Baits may show results during the 48 hour period and for the large colonies it may take up to several weeks for the complete eradication. These are our most recommended ant baits that work on most house invading ants.

Maintain a clean environment and dispose of your leftovers and garbage daily. Seal all the containers and pipes to avoid the re-establishment of ant colonies in your house.
Do Ant Traps Attract More Ants?
Ant traps do not work like other insecticides and they show slow but effective results. When ants are attracted to sugar-based baits or other ant baits, they leave a pheromone trail so that the other ants can follow them. It takes some time for the ants to ingest these baits. In the meantime, these baits will lure more ants to them but this does not matter as the end result will always be the same – the entire ant colony will die.
How to Attract Queen Ants?
If you are using ant traps or ant baits, you do not need to attract the queen to eradicate the colony. Workers will take the poisonous bait to the queen and this process will cause its death.
Nevertheless, you can catch the ant queen during nuptial flight or when it moves to other nests for the establishment of a new colony. It is very difficult to lure the queen ant out of its nest. Some people use lamps or other light sources to irritate or annoy the ant colony so that the ant queen moves out of her shelter but the success rate of this process is very low.
An ant infestation can lead to massive structural or economical damage if not managed in earlier stages. There are thousands of ant species that show different behavior and react differently to specific products or environmental conditions. According to their behavior and nature, they can be classified into different types and categories.
Indoor ants build their shelters in houses, buildings or restaurants and depend upon food leftovers or other products. On the other hand, outdoor ants are mostly scavengers or foragers, they live in the woods, leaf litter or in mounds under the soil. They are attracted to dead or decomposing matter and prey upon aphids, termites or on other pests.
On the other hand, there are sugar ants and field ants. Sugar ants are a commonly known group of indoor or household ants and while field ants are a group of ants that prefer to build their shelters in the fields.
There are different factors that attract ants in houses such as better access to food, good water sources, cozy shelter or a suitable environment. Ants have special antennae that are used to detect the food scent or trails. If you have poor hygienic conditions or spilled food in your house. Ants will follow the food trails and will leave behind them pheromone trails that are used to attract other ants.
Ants will build their nests in your house if they find damp, dark or warm places. Summer drought or winter can also draw ants indoors. Ants are especially attracted to electronics or electrical outlets due to the electromagnetic field around them.
You can use artificial or home-based natural ant baits or traps to lure ants out of their shelters and to eradicate their colonies. Maintain cleanliness in your homes, seal your pipes and keep your bathrooms and kitchen dry to prevent the indoor infestation of ants.
